Where was your Pennington Wallet-on-Strap made?
The Pennington is made in Léon, Mexico. This city has a rich history in leather-working and tanning, where craftsmen have been paying acute attention to detail and making many of the finest leather goods in the world for generations. It's the leather shoe capital of the world!
The vegetable-tanned leather featured in this bag's construction is the same type as our signature Bellfield handles. Cognac and Raven are both veg tan leathers, meaning the rawhide was made into leather using vegetable tannins, usually derived from tree bark oils. This is the oldest method of leather tanning and is very natural. The end product creates a beautiful firm bodied leather, perfect for durability and structure, which is exactly why our Creative Director and Head Designer picked this material.
Vegetable Tanned Leather ages in a way that enhances its character and beauty. With use, a process known as patina will take place when natural oils from the leather emerge and darken the surface. This type of leather will express its unique relationship with you over time, as different areas may darken more than others. For example, if you put your phone in the same spot every day, its repeated presence in that area will leave an impression in the shape of your phone. With use, this leather will soften and break in over time, becoming comfortable in hand or on the shoulder, as it forms gracefully with your shape and your usage.
Cognac and Raven should be conditioned often with use, 1-2 times a month is suggested. Keep pens with caps inside your bag. Ink is as permanent as a tattoo on your leather. Avoid contact with wine, oils, and pen ink.
We are always actively looking for methods that can lessen our carbon footprint and are proud to say this bag is another step toward achieving this goal. In many cases, making a leather bag from start to finish requires thousands of miles of transportation around the globe. Not only is the Pennington Wallet-on-Strap ethically made by skilled artisans in Léon, but the leather used to make it is tanned locally. This allows us to significantly shorten our supply chain and cut carbon emissions.
